Borussia Dortmund rout Stuttgart; Wolfsburg secure Augsburg draw

Borussia Dortmund appear to be the only side in the Bundesliga able to make the race for the title interesting after they beat Stuttgart 4-1 on Sunday, while third-placed Wolfsburg slipped up in Augsburg.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on target twice for Dortmund, with Gonzalo Castro putting them in front and an own goal from Georg Niedermeier helping them reduce the arrears on leaders Bayern Munich to eight points.

With three games to go to the winter break, and the midway stage of the season, that means Bayern cannot yet be certain of leading the way heading into 2016.

Perhaps more importantly for Dortmund, however, the win took them seven points clear of Wolfsburg, who would have seen their 0-0 draw at relegation-threatened Augsburg as a point gained rather than two lost after the late dismissal of Dante.

It was also an important point for Augsburg as they were able to take full advantage of Stuttgart's heavy defeat to trade places with them at the bottom and move into the relegation play-off berth.

Sunday's other game also saw the spoils shared between Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke in their 1-1 draw.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting put the visitors in front, but an own goal from Sascha Riether left both sides still struggling short of their expectations, in sixth and eighth respectively in the standings and four points behind the top three.

Schalke will be back in action on Friday, when they host Hannover, while Wolfsburg and Dortmund meet in next weekend's big match on Saturday evening.
