Bayern Munich eight points clear at top after seeing off Schalke

Bayern Munich opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a 3-1 win at Schalke on Saturday evening.

David Alaba put Pep Guardiola's men in front after nine minutes when his heavily-deflected effort flew in but Max Meyer levelled for the hosts, who ended the first half strongly.

Javi Martinez restored Bayern's lead midway through the second half and there was only going to be one winner from then on, with Thomas Muller sealing the points in stoppage time.

Wolfsburg thrashed Werder Bremen 6-0 at the Volkswagen-Arena to close the gap on second-placed Borussia Dortmund to five points.

An Alejandro Galvez own goal set the Wolves on their way to victory, with Max Kruse adding a second just before half-time.

Vieirinha, Josuha Guilavogui, Bas Dost and Kruse again completed the rout as Bremen put up little resistance with some awful defending.

The hosts, looking to capitalise on Dortmund's slip-up on Friday, took little time to put Felix Wiedwald in the Bremen goal under pressure, and they needed a little over 10 minutes before they found a way through and the result was never in doubt from there on in.

Borussia Monchengladbach marked Andre Schubert's first game as their new full-time head coach with a 2-1 win over struggling Hannover at the Borussia Park Stadion, extending their recent unbeaten run to eight matches.

Ibrahima Traore gave the Foals the lead 10 minutes before the interval, sending his shot through Ron-Robert Zieler's legs from excellent play by Mahmoud Dahoud.

Yann Sommer made a great save to deny Kenan Karaman just before half-time as Monchengladbach deservedly took a 1-0 lead into the break, but Artur Sobiech brought Hannover level midway through the second half.

Raffael converted Andreas Christensen's effort first time to make it a day to savour for Schubert.

Bayer Leverkusen warmed up for a crucial Champions League clash with BATE Borisov in midweek by ending a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Two goals from the in-form Javier Hernandez gave them a cushion, which was sliced in half by a Slobodan Medojevic header right on the stroke of half-time.

Leverkusen's lead never looked in any doubt, though, and Hakan Calhanoglu ensured Frankfurt would not get back into the game when his shot took a deflection on its way past Lukas Hradecky on its way in for Leverkusen's third, with the win lifting Roger Schmidt's men above local rivals Cologne.

Augsburg piled the pressure on Stuttgart coach Alexander Zorniger with a 4-0 win at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Alexander Esswein struck twice in the space of six minutes as Stuttgart got caught out cold, Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker added a third for the visitors 10 minutes before half-time, heading Daniel Baier's cross powerfully past Odisseas Vlachodimos.

The trickery of Augsburg forward Caiuby meant they were a threat every time they attacked and Koo Ja-cheol's goal in the 54th minute was thoroughly deserved.

The win lifted Augsburg off the foot of the table and to within a point of Stuttgart, who could drop inside the bottom two on Sunday.

Cologne failed to score a goal at their Mungersdorferstadion for the third game in a row as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Mainz.

The visitors had slightly the better of the first half, but they were unable to produce any clear-cut chances to beat their hosts, while a tame penalty appeal from the hosts just before the half-time whistle was all that managed to lift the fans from their seats.

As a result, Cologne drop below their local rivals Bayer Leverkusen while Mainz remain just two points behind them in mid-table.
