Horst Heldt linked with Schalke exit - 'it has been very, very intense'

Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt says he has already made up his mind about his future and will make an announcement in the coming week.

The 45-year-old's contract is up for renewal next summer and it was reported in the German media this week that the Gelsenkirchen club are lining up Mainz's general manager Christian Heidel to replace him.

Heldt has heard the rumours and admits it has been a "very, very intense" few days, adding he has given some thought to his future after nearly six years at the club.

"I'm going to sit down with [president] Clemens Tonnies again this week and my decision will be announced," Heldt told Sport1 television.

"How this happens is important to me, and that has led to me into a thought process which has also led to me making a decision.

"Of course it is only right and legitimate that the club start to think about where things are going beyond 2016, and that they have got to start doing this now."

Schalke chief Tonnies had moved to downplay speculation that Heldt's future is hanging in the balance, although Mainz's president Harald Strutz confirmed on Saturday that Christian Heidel has received an offer to move elsewhere.

"It's been a long time that Schalke have been reportedly keen on [Hiedel] as their [general] manager and I'm in the know about it," Strutz said. "It is not the first time that such talks have taken place."

Heidel said on Thursday that he is "100 percent certain to fulfill my contract" with Mainz, adding: "Mainz are extremely important to me and I would never do anything that would damage this club.

"Nothing has changed in the slightest regarding my position here. If anything were to change, then I would never leave this club on bad terms."
