Dortmund beat Leverkusen to continue perfect start, Schalke drop Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund returned to the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday evening thanks to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at the Westfalenstadion.

Jonas Hofmann put Thomas Tuchel's men in front, with Shinji Kagawa adding the second before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wrapped up victory from the penalty spot.

Dortmund, who have won five out of five in the Bundesliga and 11 out of 11 in all competitions this season, lead the way on goal difference ahead of Bayern Munich.

Hofmann got two bites of the cherry to put Dortmund in front in the 18th minute, but Bernd Leno kept out his second effort with his foot before Roman Burki raced out of his goal at the other end to thwart a Leverkusen counter-attack.

It was then third time lucky for Hofmann with Dortmund's next attack, and this time Leno did not look so sharp as he came out of his goal and misjudged a long ball from Shinji Kagawa.

Hofmann kept his eye on the ball and swept it into the unguarded goal after getting in around Leno's back.

Javier Hernandez sent a shot wide as Leverkusen looked to respond immediately but Dortmund continued to set the tone, as they have done all season.

Schalke piled the misery on Stuttgart with a 1-0 win at the Mercedes-Benz Arena to inflict a fifth defeat in as many games on the Swabians.

Leroy Sane scored the only goal of the game, but the real hero of the match for the Royal Blues was their goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann.

He made save after save to deny Stuttgart, who ended up with over 25 shots on goal with Schalke not fashioning even half as many.

Yet it was the visitors who came away triumphant with a win which takes them up to fourth. Stuttgart are now bottom without a point, together with Borussia Monchengladbach, whose manager Lucien Favre resigned on Sunday.

Augsburg picked up their first win of the season to leave Hannover inside the bottom three with a 2-0 triumph at the Augsburg Arena.

Alexander Esswein gave Markus Weinzierl's men the lead, which was added to by captain Paul Verhaegh from the penalty spot just two minutes later.

Hannover failed to recover from the double blow and had Tim Matavz not been so wasteful, their punishment could have been much harsher, but Augsburg nevertheless were able to break their duck at the fifth attempt.

Hannover, meanwhile, have lost four in a row after starting the season with a draw at Darmstadt. The pressure is mounting on coach Michael Frontzeck.
