Bayern Munich lead tributes after coach Dettmar Cramer dies aged 90

Dettmar Cramer receives a DFB award in Cologne, Germany, in 2011.

German football has paid tribute to former Bayern Munich coach and United States coach Dettmar Cramer, who died on Thursday at the age of 90.

Cramer led Bayern to two European Cups in the 1970s and also had spells as coach of Hertha Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen, where he ended his coaching career in 1985.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club's official website that Cramer had been "a fatherly friend."

He said: "Dettmar Cramer was more than a sporting reference person. He was a fatherly friend to me, and the biggest promoter of my young career in professional sports.

"FC Bayern mourns a great coach and a special person."

German FA (DFB) president Wolfgang Niersbach told the association's official website: "We have lost a great coach and a great personality.

"Dettmar Cramer was a worldwide ambassador for German football."

Dortmund-born Cramer worked around the world as a coach and teacher in posts assigned by the DFB and FIFA. He moved to Bayern after working for the U.S. football team in the mid-1970s.

In 2011, he became the first coach ever to receive a special DFB award for his work.
