Real Madrid to join Bayern Munich in Audi Cup in August

Bayern Munich have announced that Real Madrid will be among the teams taking part in the Audi Cup in Munich in early August.

The biennial tournament -- which will feature a further two as-yet-unnamed clubs -- will start on Tuesday Aug. 4 at Bayern's Allianz Arena, with the third-place playoff and final taking place on Wednesday Aug. 5.

Madrid will take part in the tournament for the first time. The three previous editions of the tournament have included Manchester United, Boca Juniors, AC Milan, Internacional, Manchester City, Sao Paulo and Barcelona.

The German club are two-time winners, while Barcelona won the competition in 2011 when current Bayern boss Pep Guardiola was in charge at the Camp Nou. Barca won the match 2-0, with both goals scored by Thiago Alcantara, who later followed his coach to the Allianz Arena.

When Guardiola agreed to become Bayern boss in January 2013, then club president Uli Hoeness revealed that both parties had made initial contact at the tournament.

"He told us that he can imagine working at Bayern, and then left," Hoeness said at the time. "We thought: Now that doesn't sound bad at all. That's how it all began."
