The centre-back, 36, is out of contract this summer and told the media at Belgium's World Cup training camp that he will not sign an extension.

Belgian wire Belga quoted Van Buyten as saying: "I've agreed with FC Bayern that I will not play for them anymore. It's not that easy to keep in shape on a daily basis with the young lads when you are 36. After eight years with the club, it's time to leave."

Van Buyten made 158 appearances for Bayern, scoring 20 goals, after signing from Hamburg in 2006. He won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal four times apiece and was part of the squad that claimed the 2013 Champions League.

He has also announced that he will retire from international football after this summer's World Cup, but it is unclear whether he will stop playing entirely.

Van Buyten, who said he wants to spend more time with his family, has been linked with a move to newly promoted Cologne as well as second-tier club RB Leipzig. He also revealed he is in talks with Bayern "about another potential role," which tz suggests could involve playing for the reserve team.
