Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara partially tore a ligament in his right knee on Saturday and will miss six to eight weeks, the German champions confirmed.
The Spaniard suffered an extended partial ligament tear in his right knee in the first half of Bayern's 3-3 draw at home with Hoffenheim.
An MRI scan late Saturday by team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt confirmed the extent of the injury.
"It's bad news. We're going to miss him a lot," said Bayern manager Pep Guardiola.
Thiago will miss the Champions League tie against Manchester United, as well as the semifinals should Bayern progress.
"It's very bitter and comes at a catastrophic time, just before the important games," teammate Thomas Mueller told the team website.
Bayern has already clinched the Bundesliga title.
