Hamburg appoint Mirko Slomka

Mirko Slomka has been appointed to succeed Bert van Marwijk as Hamburg coach.

Slomka had been linked with a Bayern move
Mirko Slomka was sacked by Hannover in December.

Van Marwijk was sacked by the Bundesliga club on Saturday following the 4-2 defeat at Eintracht Braunschweig -- Die Rothosen's eighth loss in a row.

Hamburg, the only side never to have been relegated from Germany’s top flight, had been expected to appoint Felix Magath as coach, only for the former Bayern Munich boss to take charge of Fulham.

Instead, the club -- currently lying 17th in the table -- has turned to Slomka, who was sacked by Hannover in December, to become their 11th coach in just over 10 years.

"I am looking forward to the challenge and will give my full energy to maintain the Bundesliga status with this team,” Slomka, who has signed a deal until 2016, said. “Should we not stay in the league, I am ready for Bundesliga 2 and working on the return to the Bundesliga."

Slomka took charge of Hannover in January 2010 -- with the club 16th in the Bundesliga at the time -- and despite losing the first six games, helped Die Roten avoid relegation.  

"It was important for us to find someone who has been in that situation [a relegation battle] before," Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer added. 

Slomka has also had a spell at Schalke, whom he guided to second place in the Bundesliga in 2007.

The German’s first game in charge sees Hamburg welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Imtech Arena on Saturday.
