Magath: I will not take over at Hamburg

Felix Magath has confirmed he will not be the new Hamburg coach as "too many old forces" at the club are not interested “in an honest restart,” with the German media reporting that the crisis club could now turn to former Hannover 96 coach Mirko Slomka.

Felix Magath has ruled himself out of the Hamburg job, who lie 17th in the Bundesliga

Former Bayern Munich coach Magath took to Facebook on Thursday to deny the links to the embattled Bundesliga side, and Bert van Marwijk will be in the dug-out for Hamburg’s game at Braunschweig on Saturday.

Six consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga have left Hamburg tumbling towards the second tier of German football, and they currently sit 17th in the Bundesliga.

Die Rothosen have a four point lead over bottom-of-the-league club Eintracht Braunschweig, whom they will take on at Braunschweig’s Eintracht-Stadion on Saturday.

Hamburg are still within a shot of the ranks above the line, with only six points between Hamburg and Hoffenheim on 11. But the 5-0 defeat by the hands of Pep Guardiola’s Bayern in the German cup, and the ongoing turmoil at the club have left quite a few doubting a 52nd Bundesliga year for the only club to have played all Bundesliga seasons.

Earlier this week, the appointment of Magath as the new Hamburg coach only appeared to be a matter of time.

However, the club's board unanimously vowed to continue with the former Netherlands manager van Marwijk. Because of the structure of the club, the Hamburg directors needed a two-thirds majority to sack van Marwijk and the board.

Last Sunday, eight of the 11 directors where in favour of Magath, but during the week one more vote broke away for Magath, who ultimately announced that he was no longer available for the job.

Magath wrote on Facebook that “too many old forces in the club” are not interested “in an honest restart.” The 1983 European Cup winner with Hamburg than hit out at “some of the directors, the board as well as the and initiators of the HSVplus group,” who, according to Magath, have been against him.

According to a Hamburger Morgenpost report, headlined “Magath wanted to blackmail Hamburg”, the 60-year-old wanted to become the chairman, sporting director and coach at the same time.

Van Marwijk will oversee the side’s upcoming clash against Braunschweig,  but anything else but three points could lead to his immediate sacking by sporting director Oliver Kreuzer.
