Dortmund fans hit with stadium bans

Schalke have handed out 31 nationwide three-year stadium bans to Borussia Dortmund supporters following their involvement in the trouble ahead of the Revierderby in October.

Uersfeld: Drowning out the conversation

Dortmund supporters tore apart the away end of the Royal Blues’ Veltins-Arena, while a masked group of fans removed the protective security glass surrounding the block. Supporters also lit flares and fired them along with tracer ammunition into the adjacent blocks.

Following a lengthy investigation, Schalke have now handed out the stadium bans to those identified as the perpetrators.

“The 31 nationwide stadium bans were handed to derby visitors, who deliberately caused damage and thus wanted to endanger all fans, players, and officials in the Veltins-Arena,” the club said in a statement released on their official website.

A further 498 supporters have been banned from the Veltins-Arena until June 30, 2019.

A number of the large group of 498 stormed the railroad tracks at Essen-West -- a couple of kilometres south of the stadium -- as they tried to force their way to Gelsenkirchen without the company of the authorities.

According to Schalke, the reason for the stadium ban is due to “resistance to police measures at Essen-West ahead of the game.”

Dortmund have taken their own measures following the trouble by revoking the away season tickets for Bundesliga and DFB Pokal matches of the three main ultras groups -- the Desperados 99, the Jubos and the Unity -- “for an indefinite period of time.”
