Borussia Dortmund squad boosted

Only Neven Subotic was missing from Borussia Dortmund's squad as the players arrived for their winter training camp.

Subotic is sidelined with a serious knee injury he suffered in November, although he has been give some good news as it looks as if he will avoid a second operation on the problem.

A scan gave Subotic and Dortmund “reasonable hope that Subotic will not need further surgery,” according to the club's official website.

Dortmund are preparing for the second half of the Bundesliga season and they have been boosted by the availability of previously injured duo Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels.

The club have only won one out of their last six Bundesliga games, and, with 32 points, currently only sit fourth in the league table.

“With more healthy players we want to make up one or two positions in the standings,” Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke told kicker. “We have not lost sight of second place yet.”

Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl echoed Watzke’s words, when saying: “We want to be more successful again, concede less goals, rediscover our old style of play and climb the table a bit.”

Kehl, 33, has been at Dortmund for 12 years now, and might be in the final stretch of his Dortmund career. The holding midfielder, who has been struggling with injuries throughout his career, will be out of contract in the summer of 2014.

Earlier this week, Sport Bild had reported that a decision has been made to not renew Kehl’s deal. But his agent Joerg Neubauer rejected the report. “No decision has been made in this matter,” he told WAZ.

In January 2013, the veteran captain reportedly turned down an offer from MLS club Chicago Fire. During his 12 years at Dortmund, Kehl has made 241 Bundesliga appearances, but injuries this season have seen his playing time limited to only five games, three of them as a starter.
