Leverkusen planning Hyypia talks

Bayer Leverkusen are keen to begin talks with coach Sami Hyypia about a possible contract extension.

A testing season waits for Sami Hyypia at Bayer Leverkusen.
Hyypia has made a positive impression at Leverkusen.

The former Liverpool captain has enjoyed a successful first six months in charge of Leverkusen and, according to kicker, is open to talks.

Hyypia took sole charge of Leverkusen in the summer of 2013, after a first year as the co-head coach with Sascha Lewandowski, who since has returned to the club’s youth academy.

During his first six months on the sidelines, Hyypia has continued to improve the team that finished only one point behind Borussia Dortmund in the 2012-13 season, with Leverkusen now second in the table.

Leverkusen have also qualified for the knockout stages of Champions League, where they will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 in February. Also that month, Leverkusen take on second-tier team Kaiserslautern in the quarterfinal of the DFB-Pokal.

“Everything turned out super, certainly better than expected,” Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voeller told kicker. “We will enter negotiations in the near future."

The Finn is currently contracted to Leverkusen until 2015, and has already announced that he is open to contract discussions.

“The club took a risk when they made me the coach. I am delighted about how it’s turned out so far. If they want to talk to me, then I am open,” Hyypia said.

Leverkusen are currently preparing for the second half of the season in their winter training camp in Lagos, Portugal, and Hyypia added that he will not be discussing his contract situation during the training camp. “I have learnt that it makes perfect sense to totally focus on your work,” he explained.
