Schalke slam Ghana for Boateng fitness

Schalke have attacked the Ghanaian Football Association after midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng returned from international duty lacking fitness.

Boateng signed for Schalke from AC Milan in the summer.
Kevin-Prince Boateng has been influential at Schalke since signing from AC Milan in the summer.

At the weekend, the Royal Blues drew 3-3 at Eintracht Frankurt after storming into a two-goal lead after 18 first-half minutes. However, three goals in the opening 12 minutes of the second-half turned the game in Frankfurt’s favour before a Benedikt Hoewedes’ late equaliser.

Following the game Boateng admitted he had not been at his best, and said:  "I never found my way into the match."

Schalke coach Jens Keller went further and hit out at Ghana: "He is not satisfied, we are not satisfied. He was away for two weeks. I don’t know what they did there."

Schalke’s sporting director Horst Heldt added that "this trip certainly didn’t do him any good."

On Tuesday, however, three points at Steaua Bucharest could secure the Royal Blues’ passage into the knockout stages of Champions League and lift the spirits of Heldt, Keller and Boateng.

Schalke, who have collected six points from their first four Champions League games, trail Chelsea by three points, but the Royal Blues hold a one point advantage on Basel and are four ahead of Steaua.

On Monday morning, the club announced that first-choice goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand did not board the flight to Bucharest due to a hip injury.

He is set to be replaced by Ralf Faehrmann, who last played in Schalke’s 3-2 away win at Braunschweig in mid-October.
