Zidan 'sentenced to six years for fraud'

Former Borussia Dortmund forward Mohamed Zidan has been sentenced to six years in prison for fraud by an Egyptian court, according to reports in the Egyptian media.

Zidan won the Bundesliga with Dortmund in 2011.

The former Egypt international was convicted in absentia for fraud over charges relating to a real estate deal.

According to Ahram Online, Zidan issued three bad cheques to an Egyptian real estate company and had been sued by Arab Company for Projects and Urban Development.

Zidan currently works as a pundit for Al-Jazeera Sports. Despite not announcing his retirement from the game, the 31-year old has not played since leaving the UAE club Banyias in January.

During his playing days, Zidan helped Egypt lift two African Nations Cup trophies in 2008 and 2010, twice providing the assist for the title-winning goals.

The Port Said-born midfielder moved to Europe at the age of 17, when he joined Danish club AB in 1999. After moving to Germany in 2005 he played for several Bundesliga clubs, becoming a protege of coach Juergen Klopp firstly at Mainz before moving with him to Dortmund.

He was a member of Dortmund’s title-winning side in 2011, and shortly after that triumph he gained German citizenship.
