Nurnberg part company with Wiesinger

Bundesliga side Nurnberg have sacked coach Michael Wiesinger and assistant Armin Reutershagen after a run of eight games without a win.

Michael Wiesinger was appointed as Nurnberg's coach in 2012.

Hesse: Goals, goals, goals

The decision was made late on Monday following Nurnberg's 5-0 loss to Hamburg at the weekend that left the club in the relegation zone.

"After the heavy 5-0 defeat to HSV and the events of the season so far, we made the decision to take this step after some intensive discussions," Nurnberg chairman Martin Bader said in a press release.

"It was a difficult decision, but it was the right thing to do in the interest of the club."

Wiesinger took charge of Nurnberg in December 2012, after Dieter Hecking announced his decision to trigger a release clause in his contract and join Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg. Nurnberg went on to finish the 2012-13 season in tenth place.

"It wasn’t easy to tell Michael and Armin. Both of them identify themselves strongly with the club and they always worked with heart and soul," Bader explained. "Unfortunately, the last few games have shown that there is no upward trend."

Under-23 coach Roger Prinzen has been appointed caretaker manager, with speculation about the permanent successor already under way.

Former Stuttgart manager Bruno Labbadia, the ex-Hoffenheim boss Markus Babbel and Bremen legend Thomas Schaaf have been mentioned as well as the likes of former Germany international Lothar Matthaeus and Felix Magath, who according to Bild is already out of the race.

Nurnberg could also turn to Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt. The club's former youth player has impressed during his six years at the Bundesliga III leaders, taking the club from fifth league obscurity into professional football.
