Lahm: I did not attack Sammer

Pep Guardiola believes the job of improving his Bayern Munich side is still not done, despite a convincing victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has claimed that quotes attributed to him criticising Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer were taken out of context.

Schaaf: Bayern bosses City

In September, Sammer urged the Bayern team to “get out of their comfort zone” and hit out at the players for “playing football without any emotion.”

Sammer was criticised by Bayern president Uli Hoeness and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge while coach Pep Guardiola added that he needs to adjust to the German way of discussing problems in public.

Four wins in as many games in all competitions appeared to have settled the case, but ahead of Bayern’s Champions League game at Manchester City, German weekly Die Zeit released quotes from a Philipp Lahm interview, which fired up the controversy once again.

Lahm was quoted as saying that if an official feels the need to criticise the team "he should do it behind closed doors".

Following Bayern’s 3-1 victory against City on Wednesday, Lahm told reporters that he was “misunderstood” by the media.

“That was no attack. I made those statements, but they referred to my person,” Lahm said. “They referred to how I feel, how I communicate -- as a person, as the captain of this team.”

Speaking to ZDF ahead of the City game, Sammer said. “We have talked about it. We have a super relationship,” and explained that Lahm had not criticised him.
