Bayern pay tribute to late Pal Csernai

Bayern Munich have paid tribute to the late Pal Csernai, who passed away aged 80 on Sunday.

Pal Csernai enjoyed a 27-year managerial career.
Pal Csernai enjoyed a 27-year managerial career.

The Hungarian coached the likes of Bayern, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund and Hertha BSC during the 27 years he worked as a coach.

Csernai had taken over at Bayern from Hungarian compatriot Gyula Lorant in early 1979 and paved the way to future glory.

In his first full season as coach -- which was also Uli Hoeness' first campaign as general manager -- the Bavarians won their first Bundesliga title since 1974.

Bayern went on to win the league again the following season and in 1982 won the German Cup.

Shortly after getting beaten by Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen in the 1982-83 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Csernai was sacked and left Bayern.

In October 2012, Csernai had looked back on his Bayern days in an interview with German broadsheet Die Welt. "This was the most precious and difficult time in my career," Csernai said.

"The great Bayern team of the '70s had fallen apart. We were in financial difficulties, and also had our problems on the pitch.

"[Franz] Beckenbauer had left for America. [Uli] Hoeness was no longer able to play with his damaged knee. Other teams had better players: Cologne, HSV. But we turned things around and won back-to-back championships."

He returned to Bundesliga in 1985, joining struggling Borussia Dortmund, where he was sacked close towards the end of the 1985-86 season.

He later made two brief appearances as the coach of Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC but was unable to repeat his Bayern Munich success.

"The board of directors, the executive committee and FC Bayern as a club mourn the loss of Pal Csernai,” a Bayern press statement read on Monday. "FC Bayern expresses deepest sympathy and condolences to Csernai’s family and friends and will always honour his memory.”

"Hertha BSC mourns the loss of their former head coach," a Hertha BSC press release read.
