Brooks close to international decision

Hertha Berlin central defender John Anthony Brooks has said he has “more or less” made the decision to represent the USA at international level.

John Anthony Brooks had an impressive 2012-13 campaign
Brooks played for the USA against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Brooks, 20, made his debut for the US in their 4-3 friendly victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. The Berlin-born son of a US serviceman had been offered the chance to represent Germany at Under-21 level, but instead opted for Jurgen Klinsmann’s USA team.

“Thing started to happen very fast,” he told Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel, adding that the 2014 World Cup in Brazil “is my goal”.

Brooks could in theory still switch international allegiance until his 21st birthday in late January or until he appears in a competitive game for either the US or Germany before his birthday.

He told the paper he had “more or less” made his decision, adding: “You can eliminate them [any doubts] soon, I hope.” But his agent, Maikel Stevens, told Berliner Zeitung a final decision had not yet been made, adding: “We are in no hurry in that matter.”

Brooks broke into the Hertha team early last season and has since missed only one game. Last Saturday, he scored on his Bundesliga debut as the newly-promoted side thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1.
