Santa Cruz not bound for Hamburg

Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer has confirmed Roque Santa Cruz will not be joining the Bundesliga side next season, despite claiming the former Manchester City striker "was willing to come".

Roque Santa Cruz: Key to Malaga's win
Santa Cruz looks set to join Bologna

Santa Cruz, 31, appears likely to fend off interest from Stoke City and join Serie A outfit Bologna after a successful season on loan with Malaga.

Kreuzer has revealed the only barrier to Santa Cruz moving to Hamburg was his wife, Giselle, who had the final say on his future.

"That's correct," he told Morgenpost. "His agent called me and called the transfer off. Roque was willing to come, but his wife did not want to move to Hamburg out of very special and private reasons. It's a pity since Roque would have fitted very well into our team, but we have to accept his decision."

Kreuzer is confident Hamburg can still nab a big name signing in the summer and insists the club will keep their options open.

"We've not only got one alternative, but three or four names on our list," he added. "We will be working on them now. We have to be completely convinced and the numbers have to fit as well.

"I won't panic if it takes us another 14 days to sign someone. With [Artjoms] Rudnevs, [Jacques] Zoua and [Maximilian] Beister we already have players we are confident in."
