Goretzka finally seals Schalke switch

Schalke have completed the long-protracted signing of Bochum midfielder Leon Goretzka after the two clubs “made compromises” to push the deal through.

The transfer had initially stalled after Bochum claimed an exit clause, which would have allowed Goretzka to move for €2.75 million, was no longer valid because a confidentiality agreement regarding it had been broken by the player and his agents.

Goretzka, 18, threatened to take Bochum to court but an agreement has now been reached after the German Football League (DFL) moderated a meeting between the clubs.

“Both parties made compromises because everybody wanted to prevent the case to labour court” Schalke boss Horst Held told the club’s official website. “We are very happy we reached an agreement and are looking forward to see one of Germany’s biggest talents play for Schalke.”

Bochum sporting director Christian Hochstatter said that the transfer had been concluded on amicable terms.

“We found a solution that keeps both parties happy. We wish Leon Goretzka all the best for his future”, Hochstatter was quoted as saying in Der Spiegel.

Goretzka will travel to the Schalke pre-season camp at Donaueschingen on Tuesday and will train with his new team for the first time on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Schalke’s €8 million signing Adam Szalai is looking forward to playing alongside Klaas Jan Huntelaar, telling kicker: “I want to learn from Huntelaar. [But] I don’t want to compare myself to Klaas.

“I can improve in all aspects of the game, especially in finishing and headers. Schalke is a giant step for me but I was seeking this challenge intentionally.”
