Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of defender Emir Spahic from Sevilla on a two-year contract.
Spahic, 32, moves to the Bundesliga for an undiscolsed fee after a successful second half of last season while on loan at Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina captain's Champions League experience will be valuable to Leverkusen as they return to Europe's top flight and general manager Wolfgang Holzhauser believes Spahic is the ideal addition to the club's defence.
"We've managed to sign a central defender with a lot of international experience in Emir Spahic," Holzhauser said. "He has been known to us for a while, but a transfer was not possible before now. He is an optimal solution since the quality and price were spot on.
"He is a technically strong player who is solid in the tackle, while he is also tactically very intelligent and a good header of the ball. He is going to help us realise our goals in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and of course also in the Champions League."
