Schalke have snapped up Cologne forward Christian Clemens for a reported fee of €2.8 million.

Clemens, 21, who has penned a contract until 2017, initially saw his move delayed as the German second-tier side were in the process of appointing new coach Peter Stoger.

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt, though, is thrilled that the deal for the Germany Under-21 international has now gone through.

"Christian Clemens is a Germany Under-21 player with enormous potential," he told Bild. "We're delighted to have secured the long-term services of another German talent. He's a quick, versatile, attacking player with a powerful shot who can play on either flank or in the middle. He's also very ambitious and has a special mentality."

Heldt added: “After Ibrahim Afellay’s departure we plan to use him as the left winger.”

Clemens is likely to compete with on-loan Michel Bastos for a starting spot on the wing.

The Cologne-born youngster came through the youth ranks of his local team, and hit 6 goals in 31 games last term in a campaign that saw the club finish fourth in Bundesliga II.

"I had 12 great years at Cologne but now I'm delighted to be wearing the Royal Blue shirt,” Clemens said. “Schalke are one of the top clubs in Germany and are Champions League hopefuls. You don't get an opportunity like this very often.”
