Leitner pens new deal, joins Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Moritz Leitner has joined Stuttgart on a two-season-long loan deal, the same day as he signed a new two-year contract extension until 2017 at Westfalenstadion.

Leitner, 20, arrived at Dortmund in 2011 from 1860 Munich but has struggled to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

However, the Champions League finalists have seen enough in the youngster to tie him down for the foreseeable future, while giving him an opportunity to gain regular first-team football elsewhere.

Stuttgart sports director Fredi Bobic spoke of his delight at snapping up the Germany Under-21 international.

"He fits our demands," he said. "He is young, highly-skilled and understands the game very well. He is also capable of playing several positions."

Leitner was part of the Dortmund squad that won the Double in 2012 and made four appearances in the Champions League last season, although he was an unused substitute in the final defeat against Bayern Munich.

The midfielder will likely be playing in the Europa League next term, with Stuttgart having won a spot in the competition after reaching the DFB-Pokal final earlier this month, where they also lost to Bayern.
