Eintracht Frankfurt striker Rob Friend has signed an 18-month loan deal at Bundesliga II club TSV 1860 Munich.

Friend, 32, had been told he was no longer needed at Frankfurt and was recently linked with a move to Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps.

But on Thursday Frankfurt announced that the Canada international, whose contract ends in June 2015, is to join 1860 on loan.

“I am hungry and finally want to play football again,” Friend said.

During his five-and-half years in Germany, Friend has scored ten goals in 50 Bundesliga games for Borussia Monchengladbach and 24 goals in 71 Bundesliga II appearances for Monchengladbach, Hertha BSC Berlin and Frankfurt.

Friend has played just one game for the Frankfurt reserves this season, but has not been included in any matches for the first-team squad.

“Rob is an experienced player who has proven his qualities and goal-scoring abilities,” 1860 sporting director Florian Hinterberger said. “With his winning mentality he is an important factor as we target to join the fight for the play-off place during the remaining games of the season.”

With 15 games left 1860 trail Kaiserslautern in the play-off place by five points. They resume their campaign at home to Kaiserslautern on February 4.
