Bayer Leverkusen have blocked Sidney Sam's potential transfer to Schalke, Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger reports.
Schalke had been linked with former Germany Under-21 winger Sam, with the Gelsenkirchen side looking for reinforcements during the winter transfer window.
Sam was seen as a replacement for Ibrahim Affelay, who is on a loan from Barcelona but is currently out injured for eight weeks with a muscle injury.
However, Leverkusen are unwilling to let the 24-year-old leave the BayArena , with director of sport Rudi Voller saying: “He is an important piece in our plans for the second part of the season. There is no alternative to this decision."
Leverkusen have already sold Brazilian midfielder Renato Augusto and will be without injured midfielder Karim Bellarabi when Bundesliga resumes next week. Sam has only featured in six Bundesliga games this season, but scored four goals for Leverkusen.
Schalke have also been linked with Dynamo Kiev's Raffael and former Hoffenheim midfielder Carlos Eduardo, who currently plays for Russian outfit Rubin Kazan.
