Schalke 04 players celebrate with fans after an impressive 2-1 win over Ruhr derby rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Schalke picked up their second win in a week and arguably their most important in years as they beat local rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Revierderby.

Joel Matip gave the Royal Blues the lead before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added a second goal.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back, but despite their efforts, Dortmund were unable to find an equaliser as they fell to their third defeat of the season after just six games, seeing Schalke not only gain the local bragging rights, but also move a point ahead of them in the Bundesliga standings.

Both sides had been struggling for form this season, but significantly Schalke had notched their first win in emphatic fashion in midweek, beating Werder Bremen 3-0.

That result ensured their spirits were slightly higher coming into this 145th derby with Dortmund, and that showed.

After 10 minutes, they were already in front with Matip left alone on the edge of the six-yard box to head home from Dennis Aogo's cross.

Ciro Immobile had Dortmund's best chances, albeit without being able to test Schalke's under-worked goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann.

The hosts then doubled their lead, and given the state of their defending, Dortmund could not really complain either.

Roman Weidenfeller saved from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but Adrian Ramos failed to clear his lines and the ball fell once again for the Dutchman, whose effort was this time deflected to Choupo-Moting, and he converted.

Aubameyang fired a 15-yard effort past Fahrmann within three minutes of Schalke's second, and it was game on inside the Arena AufSchalke.

Immobile warned Schalke of what they were in for in the second half with a powerful shot which Fahrmann pushed behind with his fingertips.

The visitors' appeals for a penalty were waved away by the referee in the 66th minute when Ramos went to ground under the challenge of Matip with the emotions rising on and off the field.

The fans played their part in keeping Dortmund out, providing a hostile backdrop which turned to jubilation when the final whistle blew to seal their second win of the season.
