Bayern Munich underlined their superiority in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 win at third-placed Augsburg on Saturday.

Medhi Benatia put the Bavarians ahead and three more goals followed in the space of just 11 minutes with Arjen Robben (2) and Robert Lewandowski ensuring Pep Guardiola's men moved 10 points clear of Wolfsburg - who play on Sunday - at the top.

Augsburg had more than held their own for the first 45 minutes, but had to admit they, like the rest of the Bundesliga, were inferior to Bayern in the second half.

The home side had never been so close to Bayern at such an advanced stage of the season with just two positions and 12 points separating them coming into the game.

They showed the confidence one might expect from a side pushing for a place in the Champions League too, Tobias Werner heading straight at Manuel Neuer with the first opening of the game.

Robben shot wide of Alexander Manninger's goal before another effort from the Dutchman from the same distance was deflected just wide of the post moments after.

Arjen Robben was on target in an easy win for Bayern Munich.

Franck Ribery also tested Manninger from distance with Augsburg not letting them get any closer to their goal while, at the same time, attacking frequently themselves with Werner and Halil Altintop not making the most of a three-against-two scenario in the 25th minute.

An angled effort from Robben proved to be the best chance of the first half, but Manninger saved it, while Neuer got lucky when he raced out of his goal but was adjudged to have been fouled by Werner when it appeared he had actually committed the infringement.

Manninger pushed Xabi Alonso's header out from right on the goal line early in the second half before Ribery missed the best chance of the game as Bayern started to find their usual form.

The goal was not long in coming with Benatia getting his head to Ribery's free-kick to divert it against the inside of the far post and in.

Robben made it two within two minutes with Manninger unable to do anything this time as the Dutchman curled his 20-yard effort off the inside of the opposite post.

Lewandowski added a third midway through the second half when he shot from the same distance to Robben, choosing to aim for the bottom corner with the ball grazing the post on its way in.

Robben netted the fourth just minutes later, this time picking the bottom right-hand corner of Manninger's goal with his deadly left foot.
