  • Jared Francisco Echavarria Borgetti 34'

1 - 1

  • Alessandro Del Piero 85'
  • 90'

A Redemption Song will be sung for Del Piero after his leveller. Italy haven't gone the way of their French and Argentine counterparts. And that must be a relief. Mexico, meanwhile, have been impressive in this group and are really in form.

  • 90'

The ref's had enough of the training-ground passing stuff. Both teams go through. And the subs benches of each teams dance on to the pitch in delight. Mexico win the group. Italy are second.

  • 90'

This is turgid stuff. Neither doing anything to make an opportunity. Mexico keep the ball. They've had it for three minutes.

  • 90'

Now it's a carve-up. Some passing around and the teams know the route to the second round is secure.

  • 89'

It's in stoppage time - there's plenty of it - four minutes. Italian hearts a quiver. Croatian blood pressure reaching seismic proportions.

  • 89'

  • 83'

Del Piero gets on the end of a cross from Montella and heads in. He's the saviour as the net billows! 1-1!

  • 82'

  • 82'

Zambrotta is fouled. Long ball will be launched. Del Piero fouled. Free-kick from the edge of the 'd'.

  • 80'

Zanetti's cross knocked away by Carmona. Totti slopes off - he's had an appalling game to come over in an Alan Green fashion.

  • 76'

Totti is fouled this time. Chance to hit the ball in.

  • 43'

Vieri's nod on is to a Mexican defender. Italy push hard.

  • 41'

Marques gets the ball from the kick-off and hits a long ball. Panucci clears.

Mexico need the draw but have picked an attacking line-up. Italy will have to attack - not their forte, of course.

Nesta returns for Italy - that's a real boon for them after Materazzi's woes against the Croats. He'll be needed to stop the wiles of Cuauthémoc Blanco.

It's crunch time for the azzurri (or should that be al dente?). They need to win to make sure they don't join Argentina and France in the World Cup hall of shame.
