Thanks for following today's game on ESPN Gamecast. Join us in half an hour for the other clash from this group, Japan vs Cameroon from Bloemfontein.

  • 90'

Comment from Dale Johnson: The Danes are going to struggle to get out of this group. Nothing in attack and a suspect defence.

  • 90'

The Dutch looked solid and were impressive at times in attack. Van Persie was their dangerman and the sprightly Elia added some much needed verve to their attacks. Worthy winners in the end, and you know there's more left in the tank.

  • 90'

    Netherlands celebrate their second goal.

  • 90'

  • 90'

The hammer blow was Simon Poulsen's own goal within a minute of the restart, from which Denmark failed to recover.

  • 90'

And that's that. Netherlands beat Denmark 2-0 in the opening game of Group E.

  • 90'

The Danes are chasing shadows. We are playing out injury time.

  • 90'

Netherlands substitution: De Zeeuw for De Jong

  • 89'

Denmark are searching for a consolation, but it appears to be in vain. Rommedahl's cross is to no one. The Danes look dejected. The Dutch look delighted.

  • 88'

Comment from John Brewin at Soccer City: Kuyt's goal signals a mass exit from fans. The Dutch have been superior yet still torpid. Germany are still the market leaders in terms of performance.

  • 87'

Poulsen saves Denmark from conceding a third! Afellay's effort appeared to be going in before Simon Poulsen acrobatically clears off the line.

  • 86'

Kuyt will never score an easier goal but it's no more than they deserve. Elia deserves great credit for his role in that move. He has looked superb since coming on.

  • 84'

GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL! 2-0 Netherlands! Game, set and match to the Dutch. The excellent De Jong feeds Elia with a perfect throughball and Elia's sidefooted shot bounces back off the post and is tapped in by Kuyt.

  • 82'

Sneijder hits the bar! Great effort, off balance, with his left foot is deflected and appeared to be looping over the helpless Thomas Sorensen. He was grateful to see the ball bounce off the top of the upright.

  • 80'

Comment from John Brewin at Soccer City: I'm afraid this game has followed the disjointed fashion of many of the rest of the matches. Whether it is nerves, unfamiliar surroundings, I don't know. 83,465 is supposedly the attendance. I am afraid that is simply not true.

  • 78'

For the record, Denmark's 73rd minute substitute Christian Eriksen is the youngest player at this World Cup. The Ajax playmaker is just 18.

  • 76'

Netherlands substitution: Afellay for van Persie

  • 75'

    Netherlands to win, with bet365
    Denmark to win, with bet365

  • 75'

This time van Bommel comes close but his shot from a tight angle only finds the right side netting.

  • 74'

Netherlands are cranking up the pressure as they look to wrap this game up.

  • 73'

    Denmark substitution: Eriksen for Kahlenburg.

  • 71'

Elia has looked very lively after his introduction and feeds Sneijder in space, but Sneijder loses the ball.

  • 69'

Woe for Thomas Sorensen as Netherlands celebrate.

  • 69'

  • 68'

Great first touch by Elia as he takes the ball around two Denmark men in one touch and starts a Dutch break down the left. His cut back is slightly behind his teammates in the box, but fantastic skill by Elia, the Hamburg man.

  • 67'

Netherlands substitution: Elia for van der Vaart.

  • 65'

Simon Poulsen (r) managed to head in the wrong direction.

  • 65'

  • 64'

Denmark are pinning Netherlands back here. But their final ball into the box is lacking almost every time. This time Gronkjaer is the guilty party.

  • 63'

Kjaer picks up a silly yellow. More for his reaction than the foul itself.

  • 62'

    Yellow card: Simon Kjaer (Denmark)

  • 62'

Simon Kjaer goes mad at the referee after he is penalised for dragging down Sneijder.

  • 61'

    Denmark substitution: Beckmann for Bendtner

  • 60'

    Netherlands to win, with bet365
    Denmark to win, with bet365

  • 60'

Robin van Persie puts the ball into the net after the referee had blown for offside. The French official gives van Persie a talking to for that.

  • 59'

Van der Vaart improvises a shot from van Persie's cross and almost catches Sorensen out, but the Dane manages to hang on to the ball. But he was scrambling there.

  • 57'

The goal was exactly what this game needed, it's certainly opened things up.

  • 56'

Denmark coach Olsen has made a positive change there and it almost immediately pays off. Gronkjaer's ball in to the box is eventually headed up and out by van Persie as Simon Kjaer was lurking.

  • 55'

    Denmark substitution: Gronkjaer for Enevoldsen.

  • 53'

Comment from John Brewin at Soccer City: Call me Nostradamus. Weird reaction in the stands as most were still queueing up for food.

  • 51'

Denmark are battling just to get a foot hold in this second half. They still looked stunned by that own goal, and Morten Olsen's half time team talk went out of the window in all of 30 seconds.

  • 49'

Van Persie is causing problems again at the back for Denmark, they are all over the place.

  • 47'

Awful start for the Danes after a resolute first half display.

  • 46'

The ball took a deflection off the back off Daniel Agger on it's way in. A comedy of errors at the back.

  • 46'

GOOOOAAAAALLLLLL! 1-0 Netherlands! Denmark have shot themselves in the foot. An own goal from Simon Poulsen after Van Persie put the Denmark defence under some mild pressure. Poulsen is presumably trying to head away, but heads it into his own net.

  • 46'

Netherlands get the second half underway.

  • 45'

    Netherlands to win, with bet365
    Denmark to win, with bet365

  • 45'

Comment from John Brewin at Soccer City: This is edgy stuff. Neither team yet to get the break or pull off the touch to create the space to score from. Very similar to many of the games we have already seen. I would wager a mistake will win this.

  • 45'

The best chance of the half was the header that fell to Bendtner after 26 minutes. Should really have got it on target, but we've come to expect that standard of finishing from the Arsenal man.

  • 45'

And that's half time. No added time at the end of a cagey, slightly lacklustre half.

  • 45'

Heitinga does enough to clear for a throw.

  • 44'

Denmark win a late first half corner...

  • 44'

De Jong is penalised for a horrible late tackle on Bendtner. Plus the collection of wild tackles that preceded it.

  • 43'

Yellow card: Nigel De Jong (Netherlands)

  • 42'

Van Persie comes close for Netherlands. He sends Agger one way and then the other, before firing wide.

  • 41'

Nicklas Bendtner fights for the ball with Netherlands' defender Joris Mathijsen.

  • 41'

  • 39'

Holland clear the corner and they can breathe again. Denmark look a handy side on the break.

  • 37'

Excellent link up between Bendtner and Kahlenberg. Kahlenberg's shot is palmed around the post and Denmark are threatening...

  • 36'

But disappointingly it hits the wall.

  • 35'

Denmark are pinning Holland back here. They have a free kick on the right.

  • 34'

Denmark break with speed and this has been a feature of the game so far. Rommedahl finds himself with open space in front of him and shoots from way out. He probably should have waited for support to arrive in the box there.

  • 33'

Dangerous corner is cleared by Denmark but only as far as Kuyt who, sporting a new haircut, puts in a dnagerous cross. Denmark clear, but they're playing with fire.

  • 32'

Van Persie forces a corner off Kjaer...

  • 31'

Sneijder tries another speculative effort from all of 40 yards. He could have floated that ball into the packed penalty box instead. Wasteful.

  • 30'

    Netherlands to win, with bet365
    Denmark to win, with bet365

  • 30'

Denmark will be pleased with how this game is panning out. It's a bit stop start, and Holland are struggling to get into their rhythm.

  • 29'

Jorgensen is crunched on the ankles by De Jong. I have no idea why De Jong hasn't been shown at least a yellow for that challenge considering Australia's Tim Cahill got sent off for less on Sunday.

  • 28'

Comment from John Brewin at Soccer City: Dutch look superior. Van der Wiel has been the best player so far when going on long runs. Yet still, it seems subdued. Like a Monday lunchtime should be, in fact.

  • 26'

Great chance for Denmark! Rommedahl crosses for Bendner, but the Arsenal man cannot direct his header on target. Bendtner really should have made Stekelenburg work in goal there.

  • 24'

Nigel de Jong gets a boot in the face. Nasty.

  • 23'

Bendtner is again looking frustrated in attack. He's feeding off scraps at the moment.

  • 22'

Enevoldsen tries another long range effort with the Jabulani. He probably wishes he hadn't. High, wide and not very handsome.

  • 21'

Nice football again by the Dutch. This time van Bommel powers down the right and finds van Der Vaart, but the man who is getting a lot of the early chances fires wide. Good chance.

  • 20'

Denmark again clear their lines at the corner.

  • 19'

Van Persie finds Van der Vaart, who shoots with his left foot from just inside the box. The ball is deflected out for a corner by Jacobsen.

  • 18'

Van Persie looked to be away there but he had to check his run. He found Sneijder on the left but the Inter Milan man overhit his diagonal ball to Kuyt.

  • 17'

The header is slammed clear by the head of Kahlenberg.

  • 16'

Holland force a corner off Jacobsen. Kuyt's cross was searching...

  • 15'

    Netherlands to win, with bet365
    Denmark to win, with bet365

  • 14'

Sneijder is uncharacteristically dispossessed in midfield but Denmark squander the chance to break. A bit scrappy at the moment, this.

  • 12'

Bendtner, the target of that pass, doesn't look impressed.

  • 11'

Denmark are struggling to keep the ball when they get it. This time Agger is guilty of punting it straight out of play for a goal kick.

  • 10'

Kuyt gets a yard of space on the edge of the box and shoots on sight, only finding the arms of Thomas Sorensen who, despite a slight fumble, gathered.

  • 8'

Van Persie takes up a great position on the left but van der Vaart delays his pass and the chance has gone. Netherlands were attacking with real pace there.

  • 7'

Enevoldsen tries his luck from distance this time and it flies hopelessly wide.

  • 6'

Holland get away with three late fouls in a row after the referee waves play on, but the Dutch get penalised for the fourth. Free kick to Denamrk in Dutch territory...

  • 5'

And he fires the Jabulani way over the bar.

  • 5'

Van der Vaart is tripped 35 yards out. Free kick to Netherlands. Sneijder to take...

  • 4'

Van Bronckhorst, winning his 100th cap today, is tripped deep in his own half. He looks grateful that he was because he was under some pressure there.

  • 3'

The buzz of the vuvuzelas is, as ever, incessant.

  • 2'

Holland are enjoying a shade more of the early possession, but Denmark break quickly with Daniel Agger the unlikely man seeing his shot blocked on the edge of the box.

  • 1'

Denmark kick us off in Johannesburg. They are in white shirts, and are shooting from right to left.

The national anthems are playing out. We are moments from kick off at Soccer City...

Before the game, Denmark coach Morten Olsen said: "A good result would be a draw for us. Let me say that the Netherlands are the favourites. They have good individual players that play at top international level. This is a kind of a bonus match, against one of the favourites of the World Cup, and we can only surprise. We're working to see if we can do that and if we have a very good day, then perhaps we can."

Denmark are boosted by the timely return to fitness of Arsenal star Nicklas Bendtner, highly-rated Palermo defender Simon Kjaer and Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, who dislocated his right elbow at Chelsea in April.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to earn his 100th cap.

But with Sneijder, Kuyt, van Persie in attack, the Dutch are not short of attacking options.

Rafael van der Vaart has been drafted in to replace Robben.

Perennial World Cup underachievers, Netherlands, are without Arjen Robben whose recovery from a hamstring injury is not yet complete.
