Game 17

  • 90'

Klinsmann's substitutes have saved the day for the Germans and given them maximum points from their first two games. The Germans deserve their victory although a combination of Artur Boruc and some poor finishing made it look as if the Poles would go home the happier. As it is, they will now just go home.

  • 90'

  • 90'

Oliver Neuville scores in the very last minute. Odonkor sucks in the Polish defence wide on the right before crossing perfectly for his fellow substitute to break Polish hearts from six yards out.

  • 90'

  • 89'

In the last minute the best chacne. Lahm again hits a wondeful ball in for Klose who ducks to loop a header over a helpless Boruc which comes off the bar towards Ballack. From three yards out Ballack is unable to prod the ball home and Germany are eventually penalised for offside.

  • 88'

Borowski tries his luck from twenty-five yards out but his shot is a few inches the wrong side of the goal. Not to Artur Borcu though who ends up in the book now for time-wasting.

  • 86'

Lahm comes inside and plays a wonderful slide rule pass to Neuville who once more has strayed offside.

  • 84'

Odonkor wins a throw deep in the Polish half but the Poles are able to clear their lines and they need to try to keep possession as much as possible now.

  • 83'

Neuville is blown up for a very tight offside and Poland will be relieved to hear the final whistle....if the score stays like this.

  • 82'

Dariusz Dduka is on for the Poles for Zewlakow.

  • 82'

Odonkor again squeezes a cross over but the Polish skipper Bak knocks it behind for another corner.

  • 80'

Poland are grateful to get the ball away but have Boruc to thank for keeping them in the match.

  • 79'

Germany press forward trying to make their extra man advantage count but Poland have every man behind the ball. Lahm skilfully gets past the challenge of two Polish defenders and hits a great shot towards Boruc who makes a fine save. He has to be alert again to parry another shot from Neuville. Corner to Germany.

  • 77'

A huge garryowen type ball from Odonkor eventually makes its way to Artur Boruc. Once again the Polish keeper is the recipient of some deafening booing in response to his dallying.

  • 76'

Krzynowek is off for Mariusz Lewandoski. Schweinsteiger is off for Germany and replaced by Tim Borowski.

  • 75'

Schneider chips the free-kick in and Klose gets across the Polish defence to fashion a backwards header which just goes wide of Boruc's post.

  • 74'

Sobolewski is sent off for a second yellow card after taking down Klose. The Poles are up against it now.

  • 73'

Terrible pass from Schweinsteiger allows Poland to counter-attack but Mertsacker saves the day with a great challenge on Zurawski.

  • 71'

Klose can't connect with Odonkor's cross but the Poles are still pegged back. Ballack plays it to Klose who this time tries to bring Neuville in to play. His pass is blocked by Bosacki though.

  • 70'

Both Janas and Klinnsmann are looking nervous. Understandable really.

  • 70'

Oliver Neuville is on for Podolski.

  • 69'

Metzelder booked for bringing down Zurawski needlessly.

  • 68'

Klose charges up the field but is stopped by a great recovery tackle from Bosacki.

  • 67'

Odonkor has now been booked after the corner is cleared and he is forced to pull back the escaping Jelen.

  • 66'

The Poles have a free-kick on the left of the pitch but give the ball away and Ballack hits another great pass this time to Odonkor whose first time cross is well hit and wins a corner for his team.

  • 65'

Odonkor's first contribution is to use his blistering pace to get behind the Polish defence and win a corner. It comes deep to Mertesacker whose header fails to find the target.

  • 64'

Frrinz takes the free-kick but the ball only makes it to the eighteen yard line where it is met by the right foot of Klose. He blasts a shot goalwards which brings a great save from Boruc.

  • 63'

Ballack is fouled by Sobolewski forty yards out. Meanwhile Friedrich is off and David Odonkor is on for Germany.

  • 62'

Schneider creates half a chance for Klose with a good pass but the striker is well marshalled and unable to hit a clean shot.

  • 60'

Zewlakov cuts inside for Poland but is tackled well by Schneider and the Germans manage to launch an attack which ends when Basczcynski is fouled near Boruc's goal.

  • 59'

Zurawski squares it to Sobolewski but Mertesacker reads it well and makes the interception.

  • 58'

Boruc takes a bit of a chance by nonchalantly trying to take on Podolski in his own area. He gets away with it though.

  • 57'

Schneider loses out to Jelen and Ballack makes things worse by tripping the Pole and receiving a yellow card.

  • 56'

Zurawski plays it to Jelen on the eighteen yard-line but his shot is straight at Lehmann's midriff.

  • 55'

Borus is getting spoken to by the referee presumably for time-wasting.

  • 54'

Bosacki tries to reach the corner when it comes in but is judged to be climbing over Metzelder.

  • 53'

Lahm has hit the ball behind for a corner when perhaps he could have hit it back to Lehmann.

  • 52'

Germany are penalised for offside when in fact there were not. The Polish defence appear incapable of playing the offside trap with any sort of effectiveness.

  • 50'

Schweinsteiger's corner is headed on by Ballack and when the shot comes Poland get it away. The ball comes in again but Klose seems to duck from it rather than attack it from eight yards out. A good chacne.

  • 49'

Krzynowek's shot is parried and the Germans attack quickly and force a corner.

  • 48'

Scweinsteiger concedes a free-kick after getting the ball caught under his feet.

  • 47'

Ballack lays a great ball off to Friedrich but he wastefully crosses the ball out for a goal-kick.

  • 46'

Frinz hits a ling ball to Klose and Boruc comes to intercept the ball but has to stop himself handling outside the area. The referee blows up for a foul to Poland.

  • 45'

Germany re-start the second half and immediately press forward. Poland stop them though and get it up to Jelen who loses the ball almost as quickly as he received it.

  • 45'

An entertaining forty-five minutes. Germany are much the better side, although Poland have threatened on occasion. The Germans are getting down the flanks well and Ballack is orchestrating things in midfield. Their strikers look hungry and it is surely only a matter of time before they convert one of these chances.

  • 45'

  • 45'

Lahm hits a great pass from the left over to Podolski who misses the best chance of the match from five yards out. Good build up play from the Germans, and Lahm in particular, but Podolski should have put his side ahead there.

  • 44'

Lehmann this time flaps at and misses the corner but his defence are on hand to bail him out.

  • 43'

At the other end Mertesakcer makes a fine tackle on Smolarek for a Polish corner.

  • 42'

Boruc flaps at the corner when it comes in but the Germans are unable to take advantage of him being out of position. Poland have a goal-kick.

  • 41'

Podolski finds himself one on one with Boruc but the Polish defence scramble back to concede a corner.

  • 40'

Scweinsteiger is set up by Podolski on the edge of the area but blasts his ball miles over the bar.

  • 39'

Both German wing-backs are keen to press forward and have been causing problems for the Poles in the first half.

  • 37'

The ball in is a good one from Schneider but Metzelder is unable to reach it with his head.

  • 36'

A long pass from midfield from Ballack up towards Klose ends with Bak jumping all over the German striker and giving away a free-kick.

  • 34'

Lahm plays a good ball up to Podolsi after coming inside and, with his back to goal, Podolski manages to turn his man and get a good shot in which Boruc has top be alert to to save.

  • 33'

Zurawski caught with the ball once again but his defence manage to get him out of trouble. The Celtic man has lost the ball a few times this evening.

  • 32'

Germany have a corner but the Poles manage to clear it well.

  • 31'

The game has a real local derby feel to it. Some crunching tackles and a partisan crowd urging on their respective side. Skill is in short supply but for full-hearted commitment this takes some beating.

  • 31'

Zurawski, back defending, heads the ball away and Poland are awarded a free-kick for an infringement.

  • 30'

The corner goes high and Poland are forced to concede another on the right hand side of the pitch.

  • 29'

Friedrich, Schneider and Ballack combine well down the right before the new Chelsea man hits a low shot which is deflected wide for a corner.

  • 28'

Schweinsteiger takes the free-kick and is faced with a three man wall. His cross is poor and far too close to Boruc who takes it easily.

  • 27'

Ballack caught late and Sobolewski now goes in the book.

  • 26'

Jelen wastes a good position as he chooses to shoot from a difficult angle when he had three men screaming for it.

  • 25'

Zurawski's free-kick almost rebounds against the wall in to the path of Smolarek...but not quiet. Poland are still on the attack though and a fine ball from the by-line finds Jelen but there is nobody to get to his header back.

  • 24'

Frings now is penalised in a more dangerous position, about thirty yards from the German goal.

  • 24'

Jelen wins a good tackle from Lahm and is then fouled by the German.

  • 23'

Klose heads this one back out and the Germans are able to clear their lines once more.

  • 22'

The corner goes deep and Scheider deflects the ball behind for another corner.

  • 21'

Poland have the ball in the German half and Jelen gets in to the penalty area running on to a fine pass but can't cut it back. He gets a corner though.

  • 20'

A fine ball from Lahm finds Klose who is seven yards out with just Boruc to beat but can only hit his header wide. A great chance but a bad miss.

  • 19'

Jelen suddenly saw the goal open up as he nipped inside the German defence but when he is brought down the referee decides it was no free-kick.

  • 17'

When it comes in it just misses two Polish heads and they still have the Germans under pressure. Smolarek tries to hit the byline on the right but can't get a decent ball over. Goal-kick.

  • 16'

Jelen does well to hold of Friedrich at the other end and eventually Scheider clatters in to Zewlakow and gives a way a free-kick on the right.

  • 15'

Zurawski was caught badly in possession there and puts his team under pressure. Klose does not capatalise on the mistake though and gives away a fould by pushing in to Jelen's back.

  • 14'

The free-kick is very poor though and the Germans are more than able to deal with it.

  • 13'

Not for long though because Smolarek is fouled near the German penalty area and the Poles have a free-kick in a dangerous position.

  • 12'

Scweinsteiger lays it off to Ballack but his short pass is poor and Poland get the ball. An equally poor ball gives possession back to the home side and they once more come forward.

  • 11'

Schweinsteiger slips as he takes it and the ball goes out of play before it reaches the welcoming arms of Artur Boruc.

  • 10'

The Poles win it well in midfield but then lose the ball and give away a foul. Germany attack down the right through Friedrich and then he manages to force a corner.

  • 9'

Podolski gets on the end of a fine pass from Ballack and, from twelve yards, brings a brilliant save from Boruc who gets down low to his left.

  • 8'

Zurawski, on the edge of the area, manages to snatch a shot which Lehmann has to get down to take. Maybe not a half chance, but a quarter one.

  • 7'

Basczynski takes a throw and Zurawski is judged to be offside as he attempts to claim the ball.

  • 6'

The singing in the stadium is loud and relentless. Best atmosphere of the World Cup so far.

  • 5'

The Poles hit a high ball up towards Zurawski but he is nowhere near where it lands.

  • 5'

Poland manage to break out of their half and now get a chance to breathe with a throw-in near the German penalty area.

  • 3'

Now Shweinsteiger is felled recklessly and Poland look like they are going to be physical this evening.

  • 2'

Germany should have got a free-kick on the edge of the Poland penalty area but have to settle for one back at the halfway line. Krzynowek is booked for the foul.

  • 2'

Laum hits a hig one over the top but Boruc comes to boot it away.

  • 1'

When the ball comes in the leaping Klose is judged to have impeded Boruc.

Bak concedes a throw and Germany look to advance down the right. Friedrich looks for Scheider but the Poles block their path and the Germans have another throw.

Poland start the game playing from left to right in their all red kit, Germany in their traditional white and black.

Both anthems have been sung (loudly) and we are ready to begin. There is a bit of history between these two countries apparently so it should be interesting.

The Germans will want to shore up a defence which looked less than solid against the unfancied Costa Rica and will be looking to their strikers, Klose and Podolski (both of who have Polish parents), to apply the killer touch at the other end.

Poland will be looking to improve on a disastrous first game when they were dismissed by Ecuador 2-0. Much may rest on the form of Celtic striker Macieck Zurawski and the goalscoring midfielder Smolarek who plays his football in Dortmund.

Just to make things more difficult Michael Ballack returns for Germany and he will be looking to hit the ground running in what will be his last realistic chance of winning the World Cup.

Past history does not favour the Poles. They have never beaten Germany and to do so tonight against the host nation in the intimidating atmosphere of Dortmund will be something of an ask.

If some of the agressive posturing and language emanating from both camps prior to this evening's match between Germany and Poland is anything to go by, this will not be for the fainthearted.
