Elias, Gil, Renato Augusto score as Corinthians extend lead; Atletico draw

Corinthians now sit seven points ahead of second-placed Atletico Mineiro.

SAO PAULO -- Corinthians increased their lead atop Brazil's first division with a 3-1 victory Sunday at Figueirense.

The win, coupled with second-place Atletico Mineiro's 2-2 draw at Joinville, gave the Sao Paulo giants a seven-point margin with 10 rounds to play.

Recent Brazilian national team call-ups Gil, Elias and Renato Augusto scored for Corinthians, and Leonardo Silva got the only goal for Figueirense.

Before only 7,500 at Joinville, Thiago Ribeiro and Luan scored for Atletico Mineiro, with William Popp and Kempes getting the goals for Joinville.

Gremio, nine points off the leaders, won at home 3-1 on Saturday against Avai. Giuliano scored twice and Argentine Maxi Rodriguez had the other on a wonderful curling shot from outside the penalty area.

In Saturday's other match, Fluminense defeated Goias 2-0, with ex-Brazil international Fred and Gustavo Scarpa scoring.

The other results on Sunday were as follows: Santos 3-1 Internacional; Atletico Paranaense 1-2 Ponte Preta; Sao Paulo 1-1 Palmeiras; Flamengo 1-2 Vasco da Gama; Cruzeiro 2-0 Coritiba; Sport 3-0 Chapecoense.

In the Flamengo-Vasco derby at Rio's Maracana, Nene and Rodrigo scored in quick succession in the second half for Vasco, with Emerson getting Flamengo's only goal early in the first period. The match was played before about 40,000 fans.

In the Sao Paulo-Palmeiras derby, Carlinhos scored for Sao Paulo and Robinho had the only strike for Palmeiras.

Ricardo Oliveira of Santos, who was called up the national team last week for World Cup qualifiers next month against Chile and Venezuela, leads all scorers with 17 league goals.

Jadson of Corinthians has 11, Lucas Pratto of Atletico Mineiro has 10, followed by Alexandre Pato of Sao Paulo with nine.
