Sao Paulo can't guarantee Olympic participation as host for matches

SAO PAULO -- Local officials say Sao Paulo will not be able to guarantee its participation in the Olympic football tournament by the time the match schedule must be completed next week.

Olympic organizers say they will include Sao Paulo as a host when the schedule is released, but it could be another month or so before the local government decides whether it has enough money to participate in the competition.

Beginning on March 31, fans will be allowed to choose which Olympic events they want to watch, so the date and location for each football game must be known. Luiz Sales, an official with the city's sports secretariat, told The Associated Press on Monday the costs are still being analyzed and a decision is not likely to happen before late April.
