Palmeiras sack coach Dorival Jr. after escaping relegation

SAO PAULO -- Eight-time national champions Palmeiras have fired coach Dorival Jr. after narrowly escaping relegation in the Brazilian football league.

Palmeiras made the announcement on Monday, a day after they retained their place in the top flight thanks to Vitoria's 1-0 loss to Santos in the competition's final round.

Palmeiras were held to a 1-1 home draw by Atletico Paranaense, enough to finish two points ahead of Vitoria.

Dorival Jr., a former Palmeiras player, was hired in September to replace Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca, who was fired only three months into the job after losing seven of nine league matches.

Palmeiras lost five of their last six games under Dorival Jr., who led the team to six wins, five draws and nine losses.

Palmeiras have won the most Brazilian titles.
