Spurs ‘only contenders’ to sign Bernard

Tottenham are the only team in the running to sign Atletico Mineiro midfielder Bernard, according to the player’s agent.

Bernard, who returns from Confederations Cup duties, has starred alongside Ronaldinho at Atletico Mineiro

Bernard, 20, has been linked with both Spurs and Borussia Dortmund  but it appears the North Londoners are favourites to bring the Brazil international to Europe.

"Dortmund have not submitted a proposal," Bernard’s agent Moyses told O Jogo. "Therefore Tottenham are the only contenders."

Bernard, who made his international debut last year and is currently on duty with the Selecao at the Confederations Cup, starred alongside Ronaldinho for Atletico as they claimed a second-place finish in the Brazilian top flight last season.

Last week, Bernard's international team-mate Dante urged the 5ft 4in midfielder to join Dortmund, saying: "I talked a bit with Bernard and I explained the philosophy of this country. He is a talented boy who will adapt to Germany. I gave him some tips.

“He may not have a physique like many other players, but he is a player who would suit Borussia Dortmund’s style.”
