Fred urges Neymar to remain in Brazil
Former Lyon striker Fred has urged compatriot Neymar to refuse the lure of playing in Europe, insisting Brazil's 2014 World Cup hopes hinge on the 21-year-old remaining in his home country.
Fred has spent the last four years playing for Brazilian side Fluminense after a successful period in the French Ligue 1.
Having moved to Europe as a 22-year-old, Fred has advised Neymar not to force an overseas move, claiming the Santos striker will have more success at the next World Cup if he remains in the Brazilian league.
"We Brazilians have to thank god to have a player like him in Brazil. We have to strengthen the chorus of support to get him to stay here, but in the end he will decide," Fred told reporters at a press conference in Geneva.
"Brazilian football is at a very high level and it will help the country with the 2014 World Cup if our stars stayed close to home."
Neymar has been heavily linked with a move to Spain, recently stating he would only join Real Madrid, Barcelona or Chelsea if he were to leave Santos.
