Schwarzer heads Fulham departures

Mark Schwarzer is one of five first-team players to be released by Fulham as Martin Jol shakes up his playing squad.

After being a model of consistency for Middlesbrough and Fulham, Mark Schwarzer has finally joined a bigger club.
Mark Schwarzer has over 100 caps for Australia

The Australia international goalkeeper, 40, joined the Cottagers on a free transfer from Middlesbrough in 2008 and went on to make 170 appearances for the club.

But the signing of Maarten Stekelenburg from Roma has signalled the end of his time with Fulham. He remains the first-choice goalkeeper for the Socceroos and hopes to travel to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Other players to depart Craven Cottage are defender Chris Baird, midfielder Giorgos Karagounis, striker Mladen Petric and winger Simon Davies.

Former Wales international Davies, 33, was a member of the side which reached the Europa League final in 2010, scoring in the final against Atletico Madrid.

Hungarian keeper Csaba Somogyi has also left the club, as have development squad players Alex Smith, James Musa, Richard Peniket, Tom Donegan and Corey Gameiro.

Meanwhile, Wolves winger Bakary Sako has asked the League One club to give him permission to hold talks with Fulham about a potential move to the Premier League.

"When I joined Wolves, the club said to me the aim was to reach the Premier League together," Sako is reported as saying by the Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle.

"I am sad that has not happened but I gave everything and have always been respectful to the club.

"At that first meeting, I sat with [the former Wolves manager] Stale Solbakken and [chief executive] Jez Moxey and they told me if we didn't get promoted, the club would let me go.

"I was told I could speak to Fulham and now I don't understand the delay. I would like things to be sorted out.

"I am only being ambitious. I believe the fans will understand that. In the difficult moments we had last season, they were very good to me and I hope they saw someone who gave everything back to them. I will never speak badly of the supporters."
