Rene Ruello has returned for a third spell as Rennes president.
The 65-year-old, who led the club from 1990 to 1998 and from 2000 to 2002, takes over from Frederic de Saint-Sernin at the Stade de la Route de Lorient.
A statement from the club's holding company Artemis read: "Rene Ruello succeeds Frederic de Saint-Sernin as president of Stade Rennais FC and will lead take control of the club alongside Artemis. Rene Ruello will begin his role when Stade Rennais FC's administrative council reconvenes in the coming days.
"Artemis salutes the contribution of Frederic de Saint-Sernin at the head of the club for several years.''
Rennes finished 12th in Ligue 1 this season under the stewardship of De Saint-Sernin and coach Philippe Montanier.
