PSG gain Ligue 1 title despite loss

Paris Saint-Germain secured their second straight Ligue 1 title on Wednesday despite losing to Stade Rennes 2-1.

Dimitar Berbatov scored but couldn't give Monaco a win over Guingamp.

Johnson: PSG stumble over line

The title was secured moments before PSG kicked off when Monaco drew 1-1 against Guingamp.

PSG's players were all smiles, shook hands in the tunnel and did high-fives before they took the field for their match at Parc des Princes, with the crowd roaring in delight upon hearing the news from Stade Louis II that Monaco had drawn.

The champions took less than three minutes to open their account when Edinson Cavani dispossessed Sylvain Armand to release Lavezzi and the former Napoli man did the rest with a neat finish from inside the area.

But Rennes spoiled the party and all but mathematically secured their own survival as Foued Kadir and Paul-Georges Ntep cancelled out Ezequiel Lavezzi's early goal.

Since Qatari investors QSI bought the club three years ago, PSG have invested massively in star players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Javier Pastore and Edinson Cavani, but according to multiple reports UEFA will hit the club with Financial Fair Play sanctions, capping their wage bill.

Second-place Monaco are seven points behind PSG with two matches remaining, putting the title out of reach. PSG, formed in 1970, secured their fourth league crown.

"PSG are a great team and they deserved it,'' Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri said.

Monaco looked to have delayed PSG's title celebrations for a little longer when Dimitar Berbatov headed home in the 77th minute, but Guingamp substitute Fatih Atik equalised with a volley in the 85th.

Berbatov broke Guingamp's resistance when he headed in from close range after substitute Nabil Dirar's crossed from the right, taking his tally to nine in 14 games since joining from Premier League side Fulham on a six-month deal in January.

However, slack defending let in Guingamp, and Atik was left unmarked to volley in a loose ball inside the penalty area.

The draw gives 16th-place Guingamp, the French Cup holders, a vital point in their relegation scrap, moving them two points above Sochaux in 18th spot.
