Valenciennes v Lyon: Preview

Lyon boss Remi Garde wants his side to put recent disappointments behind them with victory over Ligue 1 strugglers Valenciennes on Sunday.

A 2-1 defeat by St Etienne in the Rhone derby last weekend was painful not just for the result itself but also because it put six points between the teams in fourth and fifth.

And Lyon's week did not get any better when they lost 1-0 at home to Juventus in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Garde told reporters ahead of Sunday's game: ``It's important. We're going against a team, a club, a president, a city that's playing for their survival.

``We want to find what we did not have in the games against Monaco (a 3-2 home defeat) and St Etienne.

``I hope that the injustices of the officiating are behind us - I simply want the best team on the field to win.

``The victory is very important in the context of fourth place, as well as keeping our fifth place.''

Garde was furious with some of the decisions in the loss to St Etienne and admitted it gave him sleepless nights.

Asked if the frustration was still there, he said: ``It remains and will remain. Afterwards I could not fall asleep every night. I consider that it was stolen and that we did not lose.

``I recognise that the task of the officials has become very complicated today with technology. If I was not in favour before of using video, I'm changing my opinion.''

Valenciennes need the points just as much as Lyon given they sit 18th in the table, five points from safety.
