PSG defender Maxwell signs new deal

Paris Saint-Germain left-back Maxwell has followed teammates Blaise Matuidi and Thiago Motta by extending his contract at the French champions.

Maxwell celebrates his equaliser for PSG.
Maxwell has impressed in Ligue 1.

PSG decided to trigger a clause in his previous deal that will allow the Brazilian, 32, to stay at the club. The former Ajax, Inter Milan and Barcelona defender is now tied to the Ligue 1 leaders until June 2015.

The news comes just two days after dynamic midfielder Matuidi, 26, signed a four-year contract to ensure he too would be at the Parc des Princes next season. Last week Motta, 31, agreed to extend his deal by a year.

"I am very proud of the president Nasser Al Khelaifi's confidence in me," Maxwell said in a club statement. "I will continue to give my all for the club and our supporters to pay back this confidence."

The PSG president added that he was pleased to have tied down a player who has won league titles in four different countries as well as the Champions League with Barcelona in 2011.

"Sherrer Maxwell is an exceptional player who contributed greatly to the club since his arrival," Al Khelaifi said. "I wished him to be a part of the project at Paris Saint-Germain over the long term."

Maxwell joined PSG from Barcelona in January 2012, helping the club to lift the French title and to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League last season. PSG signed promising young left-back Lucas Digne for 15 million euros from Lille last summer, but his more experienced counterpart has remained first-choice this season.

In total, Maxwell has played 91 matches for the club, including 16 appearances in the Champions League. He has scored five goals to date. The former Cruzeiro full-back has also played seven times for Brazil since being called up for the first time last summer.

He is the sixth major player to extend his deal at the club since last season, following in the footsteps of Matuidi, Motta, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Marco Verratti. Brazilian centre-back Alex hinted earlier this week that he was also hoping to prolong his stay in Paris.
