Andre-Pierre Gignac lifts Marseille

Andre-Pierre Gignac's late winner gave Marseille a 1-0 win at Valenciennes on Saturday as last year's runner-up maintained their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season.

Gignac scored with little more than five minutes remaining. Andre Ayew headed a corner toward goal and Valenciennes goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau could only palm the effort down for the onrushing Gignac to score his third goal in as many games.

Marseille celebrate their winning goal against Valenciennes on Saturday.
Marseille moved to the top of Ligue 1 with Saturday's win at Valenciennes.

Marseille should have taken the lead earlier in the match but failed to make the most of their opportunities.

Valenciennes had a chance to level near the end but Opa Nguette fired wide of the left upright when all alone in front of an empty net.

Marseille are provisionally top of the table after Lyon dropped their first points of the season in a surprise 1-0 home loss to Reims.

Pouring rain delayed the start of the second half by more than a half-hour. When play resumed, Alexandre Lacazette went close to giving Lyon the lead on the hour mark with a deft chipped volley which crashed off the crossbar -- although the striker was flagged offside.

Lyon should have broken the deadlock in the 71st minute when they were awarded a penalty for a push on Jordan Ferri by Reims striker Gaetan Courtet. However, Clement Grenier blazed his spot kick over the bar.

Reims scored a somewhat fortunate winner five minutes later when Odair Fortes' cross took a huge deflection off Milan Bisevac and the ball looped over Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and into the back of the net.

A Siaka Tiene goal four minutes into stoppage time guided Montpellier to their first victory of the season as they edged out Sochaux 2-1.

Roy Contout had put Sochaux ahead on the brink of half-time before Vitorino Hilton responded immediately to ensure the teams went into the break on level terms.

Cedric Kante was sent off for the visitors with 17 minutes remaining, but it appeared Sochaux had done enough to earn a point before Tiene's late intervention.

Late on, Mathieu Peybernes cleared the ball only as far as Tiene and he gratefully accepted the gift to slot home from close range.

Evian slipped to the bottom of the Ligue 1 table after a 2-1 loss as a Nelson Oliveira brace sealed all three points for Rennes.

Oliveira had his first after Youssouf Sabaly fouled Jonathan Pitroipa in the penalty area and the Benfica loanee sent Bertrand Laquait the wrong way with his spot kick.

In the 34th minute, Julien Feret set off on a mazy run and found Oliveira who drilled home from the edge of the penalty area with the help of a small deflection.

Kevin Berigaud got a goal back for Evian four minutes into the second half but they could not get the equaliser that would have kept them off the foot of the table.

Henri Saivet's first-half goal gave Bordeaux their first win after edging out Bastia 1-0 at the Stade Chaban Delmas.

Saivet rifled into the top corner from a free-kick on the half hour mark as Les Girondins claimed their first win in three matches.

Mustapha Yatabare scored twice as Guingamp claimed their first points following promotion with a 2-0 home win over Lorient.

Yatabare beat Lorient keeper Baptiste Reynet in each half at the Stade Municipal De Roudourou as the visitors failed to build on their win over Nantes last week.
