Edinson Cavani named in PSG squad

French champions Paris Saint-Germain have included record signing Edinson Cavani in their squad for the opening game of the Ligue 1 season at Montpellier on Friday.

Edinson Cavani swapped Serie A for Ligue 1.

PSG begin the defence of their title and Cavani, 26, has travelled with the side despite only recently starting to train with his new team-mates.

The Uruguay international joined the club from Napoli for €64 million last month, but was given extra time off after playing for his country in the Confederations Cup in June.

Le Parisien reported that Cavani was unlikely to start, having reportedly been unable to take a full part in training on Thursday.

Earlier this week, PSG coach Laurent Blanc said he would not rush the striker into action, and the paper suggests the former Palermo player is still feeling the effects of a groin injury.

One player certain to miss out is midfielder Thiago Motta. The Italy international suffered a calf injury in the Trophee des Champions win over Bordeaux last weekend, and Marco Verratti is expected to partner Blaise Matuidi in central midfield.

New centre-back Marquinhos and midfielder Jeremy Menez have been left in Paris to continue their recoveries from illness and injury respectively.

Montpellier’s starting XI for Jean Fernandez’s first game in charge will be barely recognisable from the team Rene Girard led to the Ligue 1 title two years ago.

After selling Olivier Giroud to Arsenal and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to Newcastle last season, the club lost four more of that title-winning team over the summer.

Attacker Younes Belhanda joined Dynamo Kiev for €8 million, while full-back Henri Bedimo moved to Lyon for €2 million.

Midfielder Marco Estrada signed for Al-Wahda, in the United Arab Emirates, while former Portsmouth winger John Utaka left Montpellier after his contract expired and has since signed for Turkish side Sivasspor.

However, Colombian striker Victor Hugo Montano is back at the club for a second spell after signing from Rennes. He has been included in the squad and could start at the Stade de la Mosson, which is a 33,000 sell-out for the visit of the champions.
