Lyon looking to offload Gomis

Premier League target Bafetimbi Gomis' days at Lyon appear numbered after club president Jean-Michel Aulas questioned his motivation.

Gomis, 27, has just a year left on his contract and Lyon have reportedly already tried to recoup some of the estimated €15 million they paid Saint-Etienne for the striker in 2009 in the last two transfer windows. He has been linked with a €10 million switch to Swansea City and Cardiff City this summer.

Gomis, who equalled his career-best return with 16 league goals last season, has repeatedly stated his desire to stay at the club, but fell behind Lisandro Lopez in the pecking order to feature as OL's lone central striker in coach Remi Garde's preferred line-up late last season.

Though Lisandro is also out of contract in a year's time, Aulas hopes to sacrifice Gomis to keep the former Porto forward, who had made clear his displeasure - even handing back the captain's armband - after initially being pushed into a wide position to accommodate Gomis.

"Bafe should choose a club in which he'll play in the year leading up to the World Cup in Brazil and where he'll be happy," Aulas tweeted earlier this week, before questioning the player's desire "because he no longer celebrates his goals with the team and doesn't shake the hand of his coach when he goes off".

The Lyon chief, who is looking to fill a €25 million hole in the club's budget with summer sales, added: "He had promised not to go to the end of his contract because we allowed him to leave Saint-Etienne for nearly €15 million."

The tweets marked an escalation in Aulas' attempts to force Gomis to accept he will have to leave the club this summer.

"We needed to sort out Bafe Gomis' departure in January. That would have allowed Lisandro to play regularly in his favoured role," Aulas told Mag2Lyon earlier this month. "But more than that, it would have shown him he's more important than the others, because he's a player for whom affection plays a major role."

Meanwhile, another player with just a year left on his current contract at OL, Clement Grenier, appears set to stay at the Stade Gerland.

The 22-year-old attracted significant attention from Arsenal in particular with his displays in helping his club finish third in Ligue 1 last season. However, L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that the OL youth academy product was advised by senior international team-mates on Les Bleus' recent tour of South America to stay at Lyon for a further season.

The sports daily added the creative midfielder could even extend his contract by a year to ensure OL receive a fee should he leave in summer 2014.
