Schalke complete Bastos deal

As one transfer saga at Schalke 04 came to an end with Lewis Holtby joining Tottenham Hotspur, the Royal Blues have signed Lyon winger Michel Bastos on an 18 month loan.

Bastos, 29, passed a medical at Schalke on Monday and signed an 18-month loan deal. It is believed to be worth between €1.5 million and €1.8 million and also includes an option to make the transfer permanent.

"We are delighted that Michel Bastos joins us," Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said. "He is a player with experience on the international level with special skills. He can instantly help us. Moreover is eligible to play Champions League."

On Tuesday morning, WAZ initially revealed further details of the contract with the online version of the newspaper claiming Schalke would automatically sign the Brazilian if they qualify for next year's Champions League or reach the semi-final stage this season. But the article was later amended to a "complicated contract paper" with no specific details.

Unlike than the club's other winter signing Raffael, Bastos is eligible to play in the Champions League as Lyon only qualified for the Europa League this season. Schalke take on Galatasaray in the first knockout round in February.

Schalke are currently sixth in the Bundesliga and well placed to push for a return to the Champions League next season. With 15 games remaining, third-placed Ruhr rivals Borussia Dortmund have opened a seven-point gap on Schalke, and Bundesliga surprise package Eintracht Frankfurt are fourth with a four-point advantage. Fourth place earns a Champions League qualifying round berth.

After the departure of Lewis Holtby, 19-year-old Julian Draxler is favourite to take his place in an attacking midfield role, with Raffael being the other option.
