Nice survive nine-goal thriller

Nice overcame Marseille 5-4 in a thrilling Mediterranean derby to book their place in the last 16 of the Coupe de France on Tuesday night.

Nice's Christian Bruls celebrates after scoring against Marseille.

The all-Ligue 1 tie was the clear pick of the night's action and more than lived up to its billing as both defences took the night off at Stade Velodrome.

The opening minutes gave a clue as to what was to come, with Marseille going ahead in the third minute through Andre-Pierre Gignac only for Nice to level within moments courtesy of Alexy Bosetti.

Neal Maupay fired Nice ahead in the 18th minute but it was all square seven minutes later as Florian Thauvin found the net for the hosts.

A Souleymane Diawara own goal on the stroke of half-time saw Nice go back in front while Christian Bruls' 51st-minute penalty made it 4-2.

Gignac's second just short of the hour put the game back in the balance but Nice were finally over the line two minutes from the end when Fabrice Abriel made it five, although there was still time for Diawara to reduce the arrears with a goal at the right end.

Lille, third in Ligue 1, served up no such drama as they comfortably dispatched fifth-tier IC Croix 3-0.

Simon Kjaer opened the scoring on 17 minutes, Tulio de Melo made it two after 56 and Divock Origi wrapped up the win late on.

There was a minor upset in Lens as the Ligue 2 hosts saw off Ligue 1 Bastia 2-1 after extra time.

Wahbi Khazri looked to have sent the visitors through with his goal after 61 minutes but Lens levelled through Pablo Chavarria with three minutes left, before Deme N'Diaye won it for them four minutes into extra time.

Second-tier Caen also claimed the scalp of Ligue 1 basement boys Ajaccio, with second-half goals from Mathias Autret and Faycal Fajr sealing a 2-0 win.

And Angers made it a hat-trick of wins for Ligue 2 sides at the expense of top-flight opposition as Djibril Konate's goal condemned Sochaux to a 1-0 loss.

Rennes won 2-0 at Boulogne thanks to goals by Anders Konradsen and Silvio Romero, while Guingamp needed extra time to see off amateur side Concarneau 3-2.

Mustapha Yatabare's 64th-minute goal for Guingamp was all that separated the sides until Killian Gargam found the net in the 83rd minute to force 30 additional minutes.

Concarneau took a shock lead when Gargam added his second in the 99th minute, but Guingamp kept their nerve to level through Yatabare in the 104th minute before Claudio Beauvue completed the turnaround 60 seconds later.

Goals by Lionel Gelly and Julien Gensel saw Sete to a 2-0 win over fellow minnows Jura Sud Foot, while penalties were required as CA Bastia saw off fellow Ligue 2 outfit Niort.

CA Bastia netted through Mamadou Camara and Sunday Mba as the match ended 2-2 after extra time, Niort's goals arriving through a Jerome Lafourcade penalty and a Yoan Oswald own goal.

Niort survived the 112th-minute dismissal of Greg Houla to take the match all the way to spot-kicks, only for CA Bastia to prevail 5-4.
