Bernard Lama critical of 'not very intelligent' Fabien Barthez

Bernard Lama has called former France teammate Fabien Barthez "not very intelligent" in an interview with So Foot.

Lama and Barthez sparred for the No. 1 spot in the France team over several years with the latter eventually coming out on top, notably for Les Bleus' 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 victories.

While Barthez played 87 times for his country, Lama accumulated 44 caps after being relegated to second-choice by his rival, who Lama claimed was the beneficiary of a media crusade to oust him.

"Barthez, he's a good soldier! He's white, not very intelligent, he doesn't kick up much of a fuss. He was the favourite for a time, but now, no-one calls him to talk football," the former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper said.

"With Fabien, we got on well without being friends. People talked that up. Barthez was a symbol of the anti-Lama fight: some players wanted me out and the media played Barthez's game."
