France's Didier Deschamps backs Giroud to regain form, calls up Laporte

Didier Deschamps has backed Olivier Giroud to come good again after leaving the injured Arsenal striker out of his France squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers, while he has handed Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte his first international call-up.

After being part of the France squad that finished runners-up at Euro 2016, Giroud, 30, has struggled to convince his club boss, Arsene Wenger, that he deserves a place in the Gunners' starting lineup this season.

A toe problem means the former Montpellier man would have been unlikely to figure for his country when they face Bulgaria and Netherlands in October's games, but Deschamps lent his support to the under-fire forward at his squad announcement on Thursday.

"The important thing is to have players at 100 percent," he said. "I wish that he, like all the players, had as much playing time as possible because like every player he needs to be in the rhythm, repeat effort match after match over 90 minutes.

"I'm not going to worry now. Of course he too wants more playing time. There have been times in recent years when he has played less and he has always managed to turn things round. I don't call into question what I think of him, what he has done, and what he can do with us."

With Samuel Umtiti and Adil Rami injured, Deschamps has given a first call to Laporte, who could opt to represent Spain.

"At no time will I choose a player for motives other than those that concern the French national team," Deschamps said in explaining the inclusion of the 22-year-old. "I don't take Laporte today to stop him from playing for another national team. I have never worked like that. If I think he should play, he'll play. And it will be for the good of the team."

Should Laporte feature in a competitive game for France, the country of his birth, he would be ineligible to represent another nation.

Lyon attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir, who had not been in the squad since September 2015 after suffering a serious knee injury last season, and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, named third-choice at the expense of Rennes' Benoit Costil, were other notable inclusions.

France squad:

Goalkeepers: Areola (PSG), Lloris (Tottenham), Mandanda (Crystal Palace).

Defenders: Digne (Barcelona), Koscielny (Arsenal), Kurzawa (PSG), Laporte (Athletic Bilbao), Mathieu (Barcelona), Sagna (Manchester City), Sidibe (Monaco), Varane (Real Madrid).

Midfielders: Cabaye (Crystal Palace), Kante (Chelsea), Matuidi (PSG), Payet (West Ham), Pogba (Manchester United), Sissoko (Tottenham).

Forwards: Coman (Bayern Munich), Fekir (Lyon), Gameiro (Atletico Madrid), Gignac (Tigres), Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Martial (Manchester United).
