Olivier Giroud: Win vs. Iceland at Euros 'perhaps my best match' for France

Olivier Giroud has said his performance in France's Euro 2016 quarterfinal win over Iceland may have been his best for his country.

Giroud, 29, scored a goal in each half as the European Championship hosts crushed Iceland 5-2 at the Stade de France on Sunday to set up a semifinal meeting with world champions Germany.

The Arsenal striker volleyed home the opener on 12 minutes and was later named man of the match after getting France's fifth goal just before the hour mark.

"I don't know," Giroud said at a postmatch news conference when asked if it was his best match in a blue shirt. "I had others that weren't too bad either.

Olivier Giroud
Olivier Giroud has turned the France fans around with his performances at Euro 2016.

"But it's true that in international competition, along with Euro 2012 and the World Cup in Brazil, it's perhaps my best match. I felt really good physically from the start of the game.

"We have had a habit of starting matches badly, but we were able to change that. It's very promising for the rest of the competition."

Giroud was booed by some French fans in warm-up games prior to the tournament, but the Arsenal striker received a much more positive reaction on Sunday when he made way for Andre-Pierre Gignac,

The striker had not scored at Euro 2016 since heading home in France's 2-1 victory over Romania on the opening night of the competition, but his brace against Iceland means he now has 20 goals in 53 appearances for Les Bleus.
