Karim Benzema to support France despite disappointment at snub

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has said he will follow Euro 2016 like a fan and hopes his France teammates can excel in his absence.

Benzema, 28, rounded off a tough season by helping Real Madrid beat their city rivals Atletico on penalties in last Saturday's Champions League final in Milan.

The former Lyon forward will play no part in next month's European Championship, however, after being overlooked because of his off-field issues.

Benzema was charged with conspiracy to blackmail last November as part of an investigation into an alleged attempt to extort money from his France teammate Mathieu Valbuena using a sex tape.

The controversy has hardly impacted Benzema's form at club level since he still managed to score 28 goals this season.

He says he has felt wronged since initially being suspended from national team duty in December by French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet.

"I'm disappointed," Benzema told French TV show Telefoot when asked about not being included in the France squad.

"I've been disappointed since the start -- since the president said that I wasn't going to be selected. But that's life.

"I'll follow it like a supporter. I hope they go as far as possible -- to try and win it -- because it's important. It's a big competition at home. So best of luck to all my teammates."

Another Real Madrid player, Raphael Varane, will also be watching France's campaign from a distance. The centre-back, 23, missed Saturday's Champions League final with an injury and France coach Didier Deschamps chose to rule him out of Euro 2016.

Deschamps decided that there was no point including the player since it appeared unlikely he would return to fitness in time for the hosts' opening game against Romania on June 10 at the Stade de France.

Benzema, however, suggested that Varane was ruled out of contention too quickly.

"I don't know how he arranged things with the manager because they took a decision quite quickly," Benzema said. "He's disappointed but after that you have to live with it."
